For most of us, religion is a way to tell
us what is right from wrong, and a guidance on how to be a good person. While it is open
to interpretation, some people take religious matters into their own hands, and form crazy
ideologies which are quite scary to think of. Number 5: Jim Jones was the founder and leader
of one of the most successful, and respected cults in the 70s. This cult was called The
People’s Temple. Jim Jones was a pastor at the Sommerset Southside Methodist Church
in the mid 50s, but he left and created his own church because Sommerset would not allow
him to integrate African-Americans into his program. At first, he named his church “Wings
of Deliverance”, but then renamed it to “People’s Temple Full Gospel Church.”.
Jones attracted many spiritualists when he referred to the church as the People’s Temple.
His church started getting quite a following over time. In 1965, Jones predicted that there
would be a new socialist eden on earth and he insisted that his church must move to California.
By the 1970s , the People’s Temple had around 4,000 members. In 1974, the People’s Temple
rented land in Guyana to create a People’s Temple where black people could live in peace.
He called this land “Jonestown”. The population in Jonestown increased to 900 in 1978. On
the 17th of November, a San Francisco congressman went to guyana to investigate some claims
of abuse within the People’s Temple. Some members of the temple wanted to leave with
the congressman back home. When the group of temple members and the congressman got
to their plane, some temple security guards opened fire on them. This shooting killed
the congressman, a temple member, and three journalists. In the evening of the next day,
Jones told the members of the temple to drink a solution of Grape Kool-Aid mixed with cyanide
poison. In total, 918 people died, including Jim himself. Number 4: Marshall Applewhite was famous for
his videotapes on how and when the apocalypse will start. He was also famous for being the
founder of a UFO religious millenarian cult called Heaven’s gate. This group believed
that the earth was going to be disposed of, and the only way to survive this was to leave
as soon as possible. This would mean they have to go to “The Next Level”, and to
do so, one would have to lose all attachments. Attachments would include: Sexuality, family,
friends, jobs, possessions, and money. These people were so committed, that eight males,
including Applewhite himself, voluntarily underwent castration. That’s right, they
voluntarily got their reproductive organs removed. But out of everything this group
has done and believed in, they were most famous for their mass suicide. In 1997, 39 committed
suicide to get themselves onto an alleged alien ship following the comet Hale-Bopp.
Everyone had a purple blanket, and Nike shoes before killing themselves. Ironically, this
group was supposedly against suicide as their main ideas were branched from christianity. Number 3: In Mexico, there is a popular celebration
of the dead called Santa Muerte. Although not all people who celebrate this are part
of a cult, its worth noting that there are many Santa Muerte related killings. For example,
back in 2012, mexican police arrested 8 people involved in a santa muerte cult who killed
2 ten year old boys, and a woman. Police officials say that these killings took place at night
ritual, by candlelight. An official by the name of Mr. Larringa said the following “They
sliced open the victims’ veins and, while they were still alive, they waited for them
to bleed to death and collected the blood in a container,”. The most recent murder,
was of a six year old boy. This santa muerte murder led to a Satanic cult. Number 2: This next creepy cult started off
strong with a bunch of brutal murders in the Hollywood Hills, including: Abigail Folgers,
heir to the folger’s company title who was stabbed so many times that her white gown
seemed to be purely red at first sight. Sharon Tate, was stabbed 16 times, her boyfriend was
stabbed 51 times. Her ex-husband Jay Sebring was shot, and the parent was shot 5 times
and had lash wounds at the back of their head. On the door of their house was written “Pig”
in Sharon’s blood. The next day a copycat murder occurred where a man named Lino la
Bianca was stabbed to death, and his wife Rose-Marie was strangled with an electric
cord. In Lino’s chest was carved the word “War” with a bunch of crosses near it.
On their Fridge was written “Helter Skelter” and on the wall was written “Death to Pigs”.
The police failed to connect these two crimes, until a third one occurred three months later.
This crime was the murder of Gary Hinman. At that crime scene were the fingerprints
of a hippie named Bobby Beausoleil. It was then confirmed that a woman named Susan Atkins
was with him at the time of the murder. The police found the leader of this group of killers
in a cabinet in the bathroom when this group of hippie killers was being raided. His name
was Charles Manson. 26 people from this group called the “Manson Family” were arrested.
Susan was the only one to admit that she was a part of the Hinman, La Bianca, and Sharon
Tate killings. She was arrested and she died in a correctional facility. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pTtFjjtCGpM

may seem like any ordinary town, but it’s got a very dark, and disturbing history. It
all started with the brutal murder of 17 year old Doreen Levesque near a high school. The
police investigating this murder were shocked at how vicious the killer was, as Doreen had
her hands tied back, her face and skull smashed in, and stab wounds in the back of her neck.
The police could not conclude who the killer was, and just when they thought everything
had calmed down in the town, another murder occured. A young woman by the name of Barbara
Raposa, with her face and skull crushed. It was also noted that this woman was lying dead
on a large rock that seemed to be an alter. These two women that were killed, were both
involved in prostitution. These two murders were tied to a ritualistic killing as they
both had the same patterns. By word of mouth, rumours of a satanic cult committing these
murders quickly arose. Very shortly after, a man by the name of Andre Maltais reveals
that he and Barbara were involved in a satanic cult, most members being involved in prostitution.
The police then found a ceremony and decided to watch what rituals they would perform.
The officers stated that they were terrified at the cults chantings and the artworks of
satan they had on their walls. At the end of the ceremony, the cult members chatted
with the officers about the murders. One of the most questioned members was a woman named
Karen Marsden. The officers slowly built a relationship with Karen so that she would
give them details, and sure enough, she did. She led the officers to the cult’s main base
in the nearby forest. There, there were pentagrams and alters all relating to satan. Not surprisingly,
Karen was murdered next. After some time, the police overheard a phone conversation
between the cult leader, Robin Murphy, saying that in fact he killed Karen. Him, and the
cult pimp, Carl Drew were arrested immediately.
