Dear elders, mothers, brothers and sisters, this is one day when we remember our Masters and remember their blessings. Because we are human beings, the deeds that we should be doing carefully, we don’t do them. They wanted that we should remember our Master every day. That is why we are advised to practice meditation. However a day is designated so that the importance of Master is not forgotten in our lives. So what do our Master give us? He ignites a spark of God’s love inside us. And that spark creates warmth in us. And Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj has explained lovingly in one of his verses. He states that: ‘The secret has been revealed, the secret has been revealed, Love is not a dew drop but a spark’, Many people think that a droplet which comes out in the morning is very good. It is known as the love drop which is soft and gentle. But Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj states that as the sun rises, that drop dissipates. That “love is not a dew drop but a spark”, ‘Sharara’ is a spark. Love is a spark which creates a turmoil within us. It creates a desire to move forward towards our destination. That desire keeps burning till we get united to it. For God Almighty love is something which makes our soul one from two. It is separated from God, and it unites with It. And when saints come to this earth time and again, they come to give us the experience of love for God. They kindle a spark inside us so that we are able to do our real work; that we get united with God Almighty and we take steps towards our destination. Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj is explaining to us about how the love for God Almighty germinates within us. No one has seen God Almighty with these eyes, nor heard him with these ears. Then how do we know Him, identify Him, and love Him. We all live on this earth and while living on this earth, we do all those things which we absorb through our senses. Through these eyes we see the things of the outer world: we see human beings and all other material things. Buildings, mountains and oceans. We see all these things. And we start finding information about them. When the children are born, they see the environment created by their mother and father at home; they start becoming like them. If you tell your children something and do something else then what you do start becoming their habits. They grasp things by seeing their parents. Similarly we meet our friends, talk to them, see them, we imbibe from them. We go to school and college, we imbibe some things from our teacher and professors. Whatever we perceive through these eyes, through these ears is the knowledge of the world outside. Hence what do we gain from a complete saint? Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj has elucidated it in detail in this verse. He states that, ‘when the gracious blessings fall on someone’. We get the glance filled with grace and benevolence of a complete saint, when we pay a visit to him. So what is “Darshan”? What happens when a saint looks at us? He is explaining, ‘when the gracious blessings fall on someone, he gets detached from the world and worldly things.’ When the loving glance of a complete saint falls on someone, it has the following impact: the man who is entangled in worldly things and his attention is focussed towards the world outside He becomes alien to it, he gets detached from it. His attention is removed from this world and he starts focussing on God Almighty. His attention is removed from the outer world and he starts focussing in the inner regions. If you are watching television, you are watching any channel. And if channel gets switched suddenly, then a new scene emerges. In the same manner we are living at the level of senses. Whatever is assimilating within us, whatever is coming, it is all coming through five senses. We see from eyes, hear from ears, taste from the tongue, smell from nose. And there are hundreds of senses in the body, through which we get the information of the outside world. So when we receive the gracious glimpse of God Almighty through a complete saint, our attention gets lifted from the level of senses. We start entering the inner world. The reality starts unfolding. While getting connected to the light and sound of God, we gain experiences inside which provide us happiness and contentment, delight and pleasure; a state where there is only happiness and gaiety, where there is no sadness, no pain, and no distance. A state which is full of love, a state where the surge of happiness start to rise every moment in us. There is no other person in this world who can help in getting such experience. Saints have been explaining to us repeatedly that when the complete saints kindle the spark of love for God within us, our attention towards God increases. We have heard many anecdotes of love of this world- Romeo and Julliet, Heer and Ranjha, Laila and Majnu They tell us that when someone falls in love with somebody in this world, then in which direction does the attention of human goes. There is an incident in the life of Laila and Majnu. Majnu was madly in love with Laila. He wanted to see Laila constantly. However, Laila was a princess and Majnu was an ordinary person hence he could not be with her all the time. So he used to keep finding the ways to be in proximity of Laila. One day he saw Laila in the pasture where a heard of sheep was grazing. He wore the hide of a sheep and mixed himself in the herd by walking on two feet and two legs. When Laila looked at him, he got so intoxicated and his attention rose from this world and he fell unconscious. When the herd of sheep left, someone tried to see who he was. One of his friend saw him wearing sheep skin, told him, ‘if you do not have money, you can borrow from me. Majnu refused to take and told that these clothes were fine for me because I could see Laila with these clothes on. This love which was of exoteric level; which Majnu had for Laila by taking away his attention from everything is nothing compared to the Love which comes in us when the grace of a complete saint falls on us. When we have his ‘darshan’, as Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj has explained, from eyes to eyes, from heart to heart and from his soul to our soul, when they meet, then a vibration germinates in the soul. The soul which has been separated from God since millions of years, the soul which has forgotten as to who it was, starts having pain and yearns for self-realization and its steps start moving towards its goal. The blessings which take us from floors to heavens, Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj is talking about that graceful glance which detaches us from this world. Our attention no longer remains in the things of the world. We start to understand that the goal of our life is to attain God Almighty. Whatever is happening in this world, is not going to accompany us the reality is not outside but within us; and we start moving in that direction. We start having a strong desire within us to find God and we start moving fast towards God. Time and again saints tell us that until we experience our separation from God Almighty, we will not step towards Him. If our attention remains stuck in the worldly things, then there is so much commotion in this world that man spends his life in this predicament only. Baba Farid has stated a lot about spirituality. He has said at one place, ’Oh black cuckoo, why are you so black!’ The cuckoo sings very sweetly and it spreads cheerfulness in the hearts of many. So Baba Farid asked cuckoo, ‘You sing sweetly, mesmerise so many hearts, make so many happy, then why are you so black.’ Baba Farid replies, ‘I am burning in separation of my beloved.’ I have a burning desire to meet my beloved, there is a devotion, there is a fire, a spark, and I want to attain my beloved, meet Him and merge in Him. That fire has destroyed me. Anything which burns in the fire gets black. So the path of attaining God Almighty is the path of love; love not in the external form but in internal form, love not to the body but to the soul. Love that takes us above this body and take us to His abode. That love and devotion which frees us from the cycle of 8.4 million species. Whenever saints have come on this earth, they have been explaining to us constantly that all those who love God attain God. God is the ocean of love, our soul being the same essence of God is the drop of the same ocean. Attaining God is like immersing that drop in the ocean which is also the path of love. We all can experience that love. Saints and mystics explain this to us constantly. Sant Kirpal Singh JiMaharaj used to explain, ‘What one man can do so can another’. i.e. what one man can do, the other can also do the same because the passion to love God has been gifted to every human being. If that awakens in someone, he can attain God’s love. If it does not awaken in a person, he will leave this world without knowing God Almighty. We need to awaken that love. And when the grace of a complete saint falls on us, he kindles the spark of love for God within us, so that we get enlightened, dissipate darkness and we start moving towards our destination. There are many verses in this ghazal through which Sant Darshan Singh Ji Maharaj has explained as to what is life and how should it be. He states at one place – he explains observing the conditions of outer world, ‘Oh, co-passengers! Do not trigger the storm so much, as there is a fear that the boat may may capsize.’ He states that when we are living in the world, we should be living within the norms and principles of this world. But our attention should be towards God Almighty. It shouldn’t happen that we embrace the turbulences of this river of the world to such an extent that our boat capsizes and we drown. We reach the state of calmness, when our body will be calm, mind will be still, and only then our soul will be capable to take flight in the inner plains. We need to bring ourselves to a tranquil state. That is the way to practice meditation, that our body is calm, mind is still, attention gets detached from the world outside. That is why simran is practiced. Only when the remembrance is for God, only then you will be able to take steps towards God Almighty. He further states that men who love don’t need to show it off to anybody, don’t need to tell anybody that he is in love. So he is explaining, ‘a verse is a verse which is the voice of silence’. Why do the poet and ghazal writers write the verses they want to express the voice of their heart to us.
