Hey, what’s up everybody? Are your beliefs regarding the meaning of exercise causing you harm? If so, It’s time to change them. Remember, as we’ve learned in previous videos, exercise must improve health and fitness while avoiding injury. Exercise must do no harm. Alright, let’s get right after it. If your beliefs regarding the meaning of exercise are causing you harm, then it would seem logical for you to want to change your beliefs. However, firmly established beliefs regarding the meaning of exercise can become extremely powerful. These beliefs will defend themselves against any contradictory information and can remain in a closed loop where new information is not allowed, in extreme cases, even at the expense of your own physical, mental, and emotional well-being. For some people, their beliefs regarding the meaning of exercise can make them act in ways that are not in their best interests and sadly enough, they often have to experience a significant amount of pain and injury before they are able or willing to receive new information that will allow them to change their beliefs. Just like any belief, your beliefs regarding the meaning of exercise can become linked to your identity, and make it extremely difficult for you to think about your life from a new perspective. Now, you may ask yourself, where do our beliefs regarding the meaning of exercise come from? Could it be that for over a half a century our beliefs regarding the meaning of exercise have been heavily influenced through the mainstream media, academics, and a growing eighty billion dollar global health and fitness industry? In order to change a belief that’s in a closed loop and causing you harm, you must employ your metacognition. The term metacognition comes from the root word meta which means “beyond.” Metacognition is a powerful cognitive function that gives you the ability to expand your awareness and realize that you are a self-aware, free-willed individual with the ability to observe your own thought process. Metacognition will help you break free from a closed loop belief that’s causing you harm by giving you the ability to consider new information, realize what’s best for you, and take action! Thousands of my clients have benefited from my training and professional experience. All of my clients are unique in their own special way. However, they’ve all shared one common challenge. They all had to take the first steps to dare to think from a new perspective.
